Warm Apple Surprise Recipe

What is tastier than a warm apple pie on a cold winter's day? With this easy apple surprise recipe you will be able to spoil your family without having to spend hours preparing it. As you can see there are nuts and spices in the recipe. Well you do not have to worry about grounding them as a Cuisinart SG 10 Electric Spice and Nut Grinder you will have it done in no time.

Warm Apple Surprise Recipe

What You Need:

  • 4 Winesap apples
    1/2 C sugar
    1/2 C nonfat dry milk
    2/3 C quick-cooking oats, uncooked
    1/4 C coconut, flaked
    1/4 C almonds, chopped
    1/4 C packed brown sugar
    2  TBSP wheat germ
    2 TBSP sesame seed
    1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
    1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
    1/4 C butter or margarine

How to Make It:

  1. Peel the apples, remove the core and slice into thin slices.
  2. Place 12 slices to the side.
  3. Place the remaining apple slices in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Add the sugar and dry milk and toss to coat.
  5. Layer the apple slices into a casserole dish.
  6. Place the 12 apple slices set to the side over the top.
  7. Bring oven temperature to 375 degrees.
  8. Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil.
  9. Bake 12 minutes.
  10. Remove but leave the oven on.
  11. Place the oats, coconut and almonds together in a large mixing bowl.
  12. Add the brown sugar, wheat germ and sesame seeds.
  13. Sprinkle with the cinnamon and nutmeg.
  14. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender or 2 forks until mixture becomes coarse and crumbly.
  15. Remove the aluminum foil from the casserole dish and sprinkle the crumb mixture over the top of the apples.
  16. Return the uncovered casserole to the oven and continue baking 15 minutes or until a golden brown on top.

Serves 6

This makes a wonderful fall dessert.  Serve warm with a dollop of yogurt to the top for a special treat.

Do try this recipe. If you do not enjoy yogurt on it you can of course also top it with cream, ice cream or custard.
